full excerpts from Bilan below:
Have you ever witnessed a turtle draw back in its shell? If you were to study a turtle, you would discover that turtles use their shells to protect themselves from danger. Just like the turtle, I can relate to hiding in my own personal shell. I spent most of my life shy, petrified and frozen, scared. Not wanting to be seen. Fear is something I always struggled with being an introvert. Truthfully, fear is something most people struggle with. It’s what causes many people to draw back and to shrink in size.
The hard shell that we curl up inside is the exterior that shields us from rejection and failure. It guards us from the unknown. Our shell protects us from feeling inadequate. When we stay hidden and curl up all of our talent, then we don’t have to worry about big mistakes or embarrassments. Hidden is where a lot of us feel most secure. Why not play it safe? The only problem with the safety zone is it holds us back. How will we reach big accomplishments? What legacy will we leave?
There comes a point and time in our life when we have to wave goodbye to fear. Come out of our shell. Stretch out our necks and move our legs in forward motion. Even if we have to crawl and take turtle steps. No more hiding and stopping on purpose. Now is the time for us to extend, expand, and leave a mark. Breaking out of the shell of our comfort zone and tearing down its wall. The risk is worth taking. People need to see who we are and the beautiful things we have inside.
No longer shall we stay in a small mindset because we are afraid. Instead, let’s break out with a bigger and broader horizon. Who said you can’t build a business? Who said you can’t become a lawyer? Why can’t you sell your own products? Yes, having your own restaurant is possible. Staying inside our shells is the only thing stopping us. Come out of the shell boldly, knowing you are more than capable. Realizing you hold the power to win.
Bilan Thompson will return in the next issue as we Interview her exclusively and get a first hand experience on her forays into Art and Poetry.
